TOP NEWS: Centrica Appoints Weir Chairman Berry As Chair-Designate

31st Oct 2018 10:37

LONDON (Alliance News) - British Gas owner Centrica PLC on Wednesday announced Charles Berry, who serves on the board of several UK listed companies, has been appointed as chairman-designate.

Berry will become a Centrica non-executive director immediately, before taking over the chair of the board on February 21 next year.

He replaces as chairman Rick Haythornthwaite, who announced his plans to retire after six years in the role last May.

Berry is currently chairman of engineering firm Weir Group PLC, and has previously been chairman of power generator Drax Group PLC, engineer Senior PLC, energy products EAGA PLC, and telecommunications firm Thus Group PLC.

He has also held executive roles in the past at energy firm Scottish Power PLC and glass maker Pilkington PLC.

Chief Executive Iain Conn said: "On behalf of the executive team and all our employees I am also delighted to welcome Charles to Centrica as chairman of our board.

"The markets in which we operate have been very challenging in the last few years, and we have worked hard to reposition and strengthen the group as the landscape for energy and services continues to change. Charles brings extensive experience and leadership to the board, and the support and challenge necessary for us to be successful in this next phase."

He added: "I would also like to thank Rick for his considerable leadership, guidance and support in what has been a very important period for Centrica both strategically and operationally."

Centrica shares were up 0.2% on Wednesday at a price of 149.95 pence each.
