TOP NEWS: Anglo American names former base metals boss as new CEO

3rd Nov 2021 08:39

(Alliance News) - Anglo American PLC on Wednesday said it has appointed Duncan Wanblad as chief executive officer, succeeding Mark Cutifani, who is leaving after nine years in the role.

Wanblad takes on the role from April 19, the day of Anglo American's annual general meeting.

He is currently a non-executive at Kumba Iron Ore Ltd and Anglo American's De Beers diamond mining arm. He is also currently Anglo American's director for Strategy & Business Development.

"Duncan Wanblad is the standout and natural successor to Mark Cutifani, bringing his 30 years of international mining experience and deep understanding of Anglo American, its culture and its context," Chair Stuart Chambers said.

Somewhat of a veteran at the mining heavyweight, Wanblad served as CEO of Anglo American's base metals business between 2013 and 2019. He also lead its copper operations in 2008 and was formerly joint-interim CEO of Anglo American Platinum Ltd from 2007.

Chambers added: "Following a rigorous global process to identify Mark's successor, including those on our internal succession plan, the board felt that Duncan is uniquely qualified to take Anglo American on the next phase of improvement and to deliver what is one of the industry's leading growth stories."

Anglo American shares were 2.7% higher at 2,794.50 pence each in London on Wednesday morning. The stock was up 1.9% at ZAR581.10 in Johannesburg.
