Top EU court dismisses Ryanair complaint over German aid for Condor

25th Jun 2025 11:58

(Alliance News) - A complaint by Ryanair Holdings PLC against the European Commission's approval of German support for the Condor airline during the coronavirus crisis was rejected in court on Wednesday.

The Luxembourg-based General Court of the EU said that Ryanair had "failed to demonstrate" the need for the commission to open an investigation into the aid.

The Dublin-based airline had argued that the funds were not only intended to support Condor with costs relating to the Covid-19 pandemic, but also due to other difficulties facing the carrier related to restructuring. Ryanair could yet appeal against the judgement.

The case dates back to 2021, when the commission approved three packages of German government aid totalling EUR525 million.

Ryanair challenged one of the 2021 measures, worth EUR144 million, before the EU court.

The aid was intended to compensate Condor for damage caused by travel restrictions in place between mid-March and late December 2020.

Budget airline Ryanair argued that the funds were discriminatory and disproportionate compared to Condor's competitors.

However, the complaint and several other arguments were rejected by the top EU court on Wednesday.

Ryanair shares were 0.3% higher at EUR24.02 each on Wednesday morning in Dublin.
