LONDON (Alliance News) - Travel operator Thomas Cook Group PLC on Monday said it has extended the cancellation of its flight and holiday programme to Sharm el Sheikh up to and including November 25, following the crash of a Russian passenger jet in Egypt.
It had originally cancelled all flights to and from the region up to and including November 12, after the UK government decided to suspend all flights in the wake of the crash, which is increasingly believed to have been caused by a terrorist bomb.
Thomas Cook said it is offering customers who are due to travel before November 26 the opportunity to cancel or re-book their holiday free of charge, with a GBP25 discount per person on any alternative holiday booked.
Customers booked up to and including December 10 also will be offered a free amendment to their holiday.
The tour operator confirmed that two flights will depart from Sharm el Sheikh to the UK on Monday evening, local time, to bring home some of the thousands of British tourists left stranded in the region since the incident occurred on October 31. It is awaiting confirmation of flight slots for Tuesday.
"We would like to reassure our customers and their families that our priority remains their safety and welfare, and we are working diligently with the Egyptian government and authorities to bring passengers home as quickly as possible," Thomas Cook said in a statement.
The incident, involving a Russian Metrojet aircraft, killed all 224 people on board. Last week, UK Prime Minister David Cameron said it was "more likely than not" that the crash was caused by a bomb.
