Tharisa sets climate transition targets; to be carbon neutral by 2050

29th Sep 2021 06:56

(Alliance News) - Tharisa PLC on Wednesday said it is committed to reduce its carbon emissions by 30% by 2030.

The Southern Africa-focused miner said it is still developing a roadmap to net carbon neutrality by 2050.

"Investment decisions taken by Tharisa's board will be informed by these decarbonisation targets, alongside the current financial investment criteria. Furthermore, this roadmap being developed will ensure that the pre-defined decarbonisation targets are achieved through the deployment of numerous sustainability initiatives," the firm, which is dual-listed in Johannesburg and London, said.

The 2030 carbon emission reduction goal will be based off of 2019 data.

In ensuring that the growth of the company does not affect the decarbonisation targets, Tharisa said, numerous sustainability initiatives are being developed with some in the advanced stages and will be implemented within the next 24 months.

"Further refinements in, and details about, these targets will be announced over time, but we will strive to exceed these initial targets, both in quantum and speed of achievement," the firm said.
