TalkTalk Launches Voice Biometrics For Customer Identification

17th Mar 2016 17:55

LONDON (Alliance News) - TalkTalk Telecom Group PLC on Thursday said it has launched voice biometric technology to its users, a move which will allow customers to give less personal details to prove their identity and which comes after the company was embroiled in a data breach last year.

TalkTalk said the feature, TalkSafe, will identify customers using a number of unique characteristics of their voice, including the shape of larynx, vocal tract and nasal passage, alongside pronunciation, emphasis and speed of their speech.

The feature will reduce the amount of sensitive personal information customers will have to disclose, TalkTalk said.

It comes after TalkTalk spent the final few months of 2015 dealing with the fall out from a data breach caused by a cyber attack on its website in October. The total number of customers affected by the attack was significantly lower than initially feared, but the company's share price took a hit from the incident amid concerns users would flee.

The launch of TalkSafe "forms part of TalkTalk?s continual focus on improving customers' experience and its long term strategy to ensure customer data is as secure as possible," the company said.

TalkTalk shares closed down 0.6% to 242.7 pence on Thursday.
