LONDON (Alliance News) - TalkTalk Telecom Group PLC provided Friday another update on the extent of the recent cyber attack on the company, repeating that while financial details of its customers had been accessed, no money could be stolen by using this data.
The FTSE 250 telecommunications provider said the total number of customers whose personal details were accessed in the hack was 156,959, of which 15,656 had their bank account numbers and sort codes accessed. The 28,000 obscured credit and debit card numbers which were accessed cannot be used to make financial transactions, the company said, and no customer details would be obtained from these numbers.
TalkTalk said its ongoing investigation into the attack has confirmed the scale of the breach was much more limited than initially expected and only around 4.0% of its customers had their details accessed.
"We have now contacted all customers who have had financial details accessed, reiterating our advice on what to do to keep themselves safe. The financial information accessed cannot on its own lead to financial loss. We will be contacting all other affected customers in the coming days," TalkTalk said.
The Metropolitan Police said on Tuesday that a fourth person had been arrested in connection with the cyber attack. The Met's Cyber Crime Unit arrested a 16-year-old boy from an address in Norwich following a raid on the property on Tuesday evening.
The arrest followed those of three other suspects in the cyber attack. Those suspects were based respectively in Staffordshire, Feltham in west London and in County Antrim in Northern Ireland.
