LONDON (Alliance News) - Sutton Harbour Holdings PLC on Wednesday said it expects to start work on its Sugar Quay scheme in summer 2019 provided planning permission is granted.
The company specialises in marine operations and waterfront regeneration in Plymouth and the South West of England.
Sutton Harbour submitted detailed planning permission for Sugar Quay back in July, alongside two smaller schemes. Sugar Quay incorporates 170 residential units and parking over 19 storeys. Work is expected to complete by 2022.
The company also received post hearing advice had been issued by the inspectors responsible for examining the Plymouth and South West Devon Joint Local Plan. These inspectors determined that the plan was sound "subject to main modifications". No reference was made to the authority's plan to safeguard the former airport site in Plymouth for possible aviation use for the next five years.
"The timetable for publication of the government inspectors final report is not known," said Sutton Harbour.
Sutton Harbour is of the opinion that the land should be redeveloped with alternative use.
"The former Plymouth Airport closed almost four years ago and at 113 acres is one of the largest brownfield sites within Plymouth's northern boundary...Redeveloping Plymouth’s former airport site could meet 10% of the city's housing need, create hundreds of full-time jobs and generate tens of millions of pounds for the economy every year," a statement on Sutton Harbour's website reads.
The company said that it has experienced a period of steady trading within its marine and car parking activities due to good weather, and that it has let a number of vacant properties with more in the pipeline.
