LONDON (Alliance News) - UK-based lender Standard Chartered PLC said Sunday that it has temporarily suspended banking services at some of its branches in Hong Kong until further notice. The announcement comes amid the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.
The Asia-focused lender said that from September 29, Monday, onwards until further notice, it will temporarily suspend banking operations at five of its branches in Hong Kong. The branches are - Argyle Centre Branch, Causeway Bay Branch and SME Centre, Admiralty Branch, Admiralty Priority Banking Centre, and Pacific Place Express Banking Centre.
In the interim, the company advised its customers to use the Waterloo Road Branch, North Point Centre Branch or Wanchai Southorn Branch for banking services.
Hong Kong is witnessing its worst political unrest after China regained control of the territory from the British two decades ago.
According to media reports, thousands of protesters have blocked large parts of the city to pressure the Chinese government to grant full democratic powers to the former British colony. Riot police are said to have advanced on the democracy protesters early Monday, firing volleys of tear gas.
SCBFF closed Friday's trading at USD18.97, up USD0.01 or 0.05% on a volume of 1,712 shares.
