SSE's Subsidiary To Pay Out Christmas Power Cuts Compensation

3rd Jan 2014 13:42

LONDON (Alliance News) - SSE PLC Friday said its distribution subsidiary Scottish and Southern Energy Power Distribution will pay out compensation to residents without power over Christmas.

The major UK energy company said it would pay GBP54 to all domestic and business customers in southern England who were without electricity for 48 hours during the period.

The company said that further payments of GBP54 for every further 12-hour period without power will also be made.

SSEPD, which covers the region from Yeovil in Somerset to West London, from Oxfordshire to the Isle of Wight and north and central Scotland, said any customers affected at all during Christmas Day will receive GBP75.

The company said that problems in the infrastructure came due to extensive flooding, fallen trees and damage to its network during the storm.

SSEPD said it had prepared for the bad weather and managed to restore power to over 130,000 customers during the festive period.

The company said it will be writing to the customers it believes are eligible but customers can also apply by contacting the company.

On Sunday, UK Power Networks - which owns electricity lines and cables in London, the South East and East of England - also said it would pay compensation.

SSE shares were up 1.1% to 1,353.1 pence Friday.
