SSE To Investigate Damage Caused At Ferrybridge Power Station

31st Jul 2014 17:35

LONDON (Alliance News) - SSE PLC Thursday said it plans to investigate the full extent of the damage caused at its Ferrybridge Power Station, after a fire broke out at the coal-fired site near Castleford, West Yorkshire on Thursday afternoon.

The utility company said early indications shows the fire itself started in Unit 4, with Unit 3 also being affected. All persons on site have been accounted for and there are no reported injuries, the company said.

Due to planned maintenance neither of the affected Units had been operational over the summer and therefore had not been supplying power to the National Grid at the time of today's incident.

SSE said it does not currently expect Unit 4 to return to service in this financial year, while Unit 3 is not expected to return to service before November 1.

The energy company said West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service remain in attendance and are dealing with the incident with support from SSE engineers. SSE said the fire is now being brought under control.

The company said its immediate priority is to manage the incident to ensure the safety of employees, contractors and the local community.

SSE shares closed down 0.3% at 1,457.00 pence Thursday.
