SSE Closes Cheshire Coal Power Plant Unit, Negligible Impact Expected

19th Mar 2019 15:42

LONDON (Alliance News) - SSE PLC said Tuesday it was closing one of its units at a coal-powered power station in Cheshire, despite not expecting it to have a significant impact on the system.

The gas and electricity utility announced it would close Unit 1 of its Fiddler's Ferry plant in Warrington which has a capacity of 485 megawatts.

The closure will see Fiddler's Ferry drop total capacity to 1,510 megawatts from 1,995 megawatts prior. The FTSE 100-listed firm, however, believed the impact of the closure would be "negligible" as the power plant has a transmission entry capacity of only 1,455 megawatts.

"The UK Government has committed to phasing out coal power stations by 2025 and it is well known that the economics of coal are challenged," SSE explained in a statement. "SSE will continue to review the long term future for the station."

Shares in SSE were 0.4% higher at 1,229.29 pence on Tuesday.
