LONDON (Alliance News) - Sports Direct International PLC founder Mike Ashley was warned on Thursday he will face "lengthy and public" contempt hearings if he continues to decline invitations to appear before a parliamentary committee.
The Business, Innovation & Skills committee has been demanding since March for Ashley to appear before them in order to question him about working conditions at the sports clothing and equipment retailer's warehouse in Shirebrook, Derbyshire.
Ashley has said he would only appear before the committee, which he has been invited to do on June 7, if MPs first visit the company's Shirebrook warehouse.
Iain Wright, chair of the committee, rejected the compromise in the letter sent to Ashley. Wright said a visit to Shirebrook "could assist our ongoing inquiry" but said Ashley must appear before the committee before such a visit takes place.
