(Alliance News) - Sports Direct and Evans Cycles stores will stay open despite UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson imposing a nationwide lockdown to fight Covid-19, an email to workers at the Frasers Group PLC units said late Monday.
The email to employees said the stores were "uniquely well placed to help keep the UK fit and healthy".
It said stores will remain open "where possible", though in accordance to the government's social distancing advice.
The email also said: "The prime minister has openly recognised the importance of people staying active and exercising, provided they are doing so responsibly".
Frasers Group has around 540 stores across the UK.
In a televised address late Monday, Johnson placed the UK on lockdown to tackle the coronavirus, threatening police fines for anyone who ignores new measures including a ban on public gatherings of more than two people.
Johnson detailed a short list of reasons why individuals can leave their homes as he ordered the immediate closure of all shops selling non-essentials items on Monday evening.
The closed shops include those selling electronics and clothing, the PM explained.
Frasers shares closed 0.3% higher at 231.00 pence each in London on Monday.
