LONDON (Alliance News) - Smart Metering Systems PLC said Wednesday it has signed an agreement to supply domestic meters to UK homes as part of a government programme.
The metering services company signed an exclusive meter rental agreement with Good Energy, a renewable energy supplier. Smart Metering Systems will supply new SMETS 2 smart meters, which monitor energy usage. The value of the agreement has not been disclosed.
The government programme requires every energy supplier to provide smart meters to all of their UK customers, both in homes and in businesses, by 2020.
SMETS 2 meters have the advantage over the previous SMETS 1 model as they allow customers to switch suppliers but keep the same meter. The majority of smart meters installed under the main phase of the government scheme will be SMETS 2.
"Good Energy is focused on making sure smart meters work for the renewable energy sector. Partnering with Smart Metering Systems gives us the ability to provide our customers with a market leading smart meter, and associated products," said Good Energy Chairman John Maltby.
Shares in Smart Metering Systems were down 1.1% at 628.00 pence on Wednesday.
