Sirius Minerals Gets Positive Results From POLY4 Cabbage Trials

24th Sep 2014 09:31

LONDON (Alliance News) - Sirius Minerals PLC Wednesday said the latest results form its global crop study programme indicate the POLY4 polyhalite product could increase cabbage yields and outperformed an existing potash fertiliser and a potassium alternative.

POLY4 is the powder and granulated product that will be produced from the York Potash Project.

Sirius said the results of the tests undertaken in partnership with the University of Florida showed the suitability and effectiveness of using POLY4 on cabbage, a fertiliser-sensitive crop.

The trials showed POLY4 outperformed MOP, the traditional source of potash, and demonstrated an improvement in comparison to potassium fertiliser SOP.

Along with the yield benefits the use of POLY4 indicates, the tests showed a 77% increase in tissue potassium on the crops, suggesting improved nutrient use efficiency with blends.

The tests also backed the ability of POLY4 to have an influence on tissue magnesium levels, which showed a 69% increase in a straight trial of the product an an 82% increase in blend trials.

"Besides the broad-acre crops it has been encouraging to see the positive results of POLY4 on a more fertilizer-sensitive crop such as cabbages which are known for their precise demands from the nutrient source. POLY4, which has a range of nutrients, coupled with appropriate nutrient release rates, is an effective and quality fertiliser," said Chris Fraser, managing director and chief executive of Sirius.

Sirius Minerals shares were down 0.2% to 12.73 pence on Wednesday.
