Sirius Agrees PPA With National Park Authority Ahead Of New Planning Application

14th Jan 2014 11:51

LONDON (Alliance News) - Sirius Minerals PLC Tuesday said it has entered into a planning performance agreement with the North York Moors National Park Authority to secure on-going pre-application engagement ahead of the submission of a fresh planning application for its York Potash project later this year.

The York Potash Project is a proposal to develop a new potash mine in the area between Whitby and Scarborough. Part of the proposed site is in the North York Moors national park, which has brought opposition from environmentalists and local campaigners.

Potash is an essential component of the fertilizers required to help farmers meet this global demand.

Sirius said planning performance agreements are seen as best practice for significant planning applications. They provide an arrangement whereby Sirius can contribute to funding the costs of the National Park Authority in order for it to continue detailed pre-application discussions.

These discussions centre on key aspects of the project such as environmental study methodology and planning policy considerations.

The pre-application funding, which ceases when a planning application is submitted, allows the National Park Authority to ensure its routine work and performance is not affected by this pre-application engagement.

The company formally withdrew its previous application last year and hopes the fresh application will simplify existing planning documentation and allow it to focus its case around those matters of outstanding concern to the National Park Authority.

The stock was trading at 13.57 pence Tuesday morning, up 0.07 pence or 0.5%.
