Sibanye partners with Johnson Matthey on PGM application in low carbon

19th Mar 2021 08:58

(Alliance News) - Gauteng, South Africa-based miner Sibanye Stillwater Ltd on Friday signed a partnership with London-listed speciality chemicals firm Johnson Matthey PLC, to find more efficient uses of platinum group metals and critical metals used in batteries.

Under the partnership, both companies will work on the sourcing and application of PGMs and metals used in battery technology to drive the development of low carbon products and services, with a focus on circularity and sustainability.

The agreement will build on the existing relationship between Sibanye and Johnson Matthey, leading to both firms extending their current PGM supply and refining agreement.

Platinum group metals form an important role in the development of low carbon technologies, being vital in the production of hydrogen from renewable energy, and also as a vital part of fuel cells, which allow for the conversion of hydrogen into electrical energy.

"We are delighted to enter into this world-class partnership which further advances our commitment to creating a greener future, by developing technologies for a better tomorrow, utilising the metals we produce. Fast-tracking green technology and working together to achieve ESG excellence will enable us to continue to improve lives and the environment," said Sibanye Chief Executive Officer Neal Froneman.

"We are delighted to announce this important partnership with Sibanye-Stillwater to accelerate development of the low carbon technologies and sustainable supply chains needed for a cleaner, healthier world. We are excited to bring together our complementary expertise to help secure a more sustainable future for tomorrow's industry," said Johnson Matthey CEO Robert Macleod.

Shares in Sibanye Stillwater were down 1.0% at ZAR70.30 on Friday in Johannesburg. In London, Johnson Matthey's shares were 2.1% lower at 2,981.57 pence.
