(Alliance News) - Shell PLC on Tuesday said its subsidiary firm Shell Chemical Appalachia LLC had commenced operations of its Pennsylvania Chemical project.
Shell described the facility, called Shell Polymers Monaca, as the first major polyethylene manufacturing complex in northeastern USA.
The plant has a designed output of 1.6 million tonnes annually and is expected to reach full production by the second half of 2023.
The plant's products will serve customers who manufacture commodity and specialty films, pipes, blow-moulded containers and injection-moulded parts.
Main construction began in April 2017 following Shell's final investment decision in June 2016. Shell Downstream Director Huibert Vigeveno added the facility had redeveloped a brownfield site.
The plant sits on 384 acres adjacent to the Ohio river in Beaver County, contracting most of its natural gas feedstock from the nearby Utica and Marcellus basins.
It has two gas phase reactors and one slurry reactor, while it will provide 600 full time positions.
Shares in Shell increased by 0.1% to 2,360.00 pence in London on Tuesday afternoon.
