Serco wins GBP500 million contract extension for HMP Dovegate

1st Dec 2025 10:00

(Alliance News) - Serco Group PLC on Monday said it has been awarded a contract by the UK Ministry of Justice to manage His Majesty's Prison Dovegate in Staffordshire.

The Hampshire, England-based government services outsourcing provider said the contract is worth approximately GBP500 million and will run for 12 years, with options for three additional one-year extensions.

Serco has operated HMP Dovegate since 2001 but noted that the renewed contract followed "a competitive procurement process."

HMP Dovegate is a category B adult male facility that holds 1,160 convicted prisoners and those on remand.

The company said the new contract will include service enhancements, such as new delivery models for education, and additional job opportunities.

"We are delighted to have been chosen by the Ministry of Justice to continue to operate HMP Dovegate. We have managed the prison since 2001 and we are very proud of our track record there and our team that performs a challenging and difficult role with great professionalism and humanity," said Chief Executive Anthony Kirby.

"I am also pleased that the new contract will see more colleagues employed at the prison, which will create job opportunities locally. Serco has extensive experience of running prisons, both in the UK and internationally."

Shares in Serco fell 0.3% to 254.80 pence on Monday morning in London.
