(Alliance News) -Serco Group PLC on Thursday said it has won a GBP200 million eight-year contract from the UK Home Office to manage the immigration removals centre at London's Gatwick airport.
The contract was awarded by Home Office Immigration Enforcement department.
Under the contract, Hook, Hampshire-based Serco will manage and operate both the Brook House and Tinsley House immigration removal centres, as well as provide pre-departure accommodation services which is currently operated under a separate contract.
Serco will be responsible for all aspects of detainee safety, security and welfare provision, excluding healthcare services, together with facilities management and catering.
The FTSE 250-listed public services provider said it will recruit around 170 additional employees for the new contract, increasing overall staffing levels to approximately 580.
"This increase is intended to ensure stability and decency in the support and care for residents, and was mandated by the UK Home Office as part of the bid process," Serco said.
Serco shares were down 1.1% at 156.10 pence each in London on Thursday.
