LONDON (Alliance News) - Serco Group PLC Wednesday said it had appointed top lawyer and life peer David Gold as an independent member of a board-level committee that will look into the problems that hit its prisoner transport contract with the UK Government and its wider practices and procedures.
The appointment of Lord Gold, who was a senior litigation partner at Herbert Smith LLP before he set up his own litigation advisory company, is part of the company's pledge to open up its government contracts to more scrutiny in the wake of the scandal.
The UK government and Serco called in police last month to examine claims of fraudulent misreporting of data on the company's contract to transport prisoners to court in London and East Anglia.
The government has threatened to block the company from winning any more government contracts unless it quickly changes and is more open to government scrutiny on any public contract.
In a statement Wednesday, Serco said it had begun its own review of the prisoner transport contract and expects the committee tasked with the review will report back by the end of November.
Serco shares wre down 0.2% at 563.5 pence Wednesday morning.
