Sainsbury's To Give Store Staff 4% Pay Rise In Response To Living Wage

27th Aug 2015 05:24

LONDON (Alliance News) - J Sainsbury PLC Thursday said that it will increase the pay of 137,000 in-store members of staff by 4%, following the introduction of the national living wage recently announced by the UK government.

The pay rise will take Sainsbury's standard rate of pay to GBP7.36 per hour, effective from August 30, above the GBP7.20 per hour living wage set to be introduced by the government. The supermarket also said that the rate of pay will apply to employees of all ages, as opposed to only those over the age of 25 as recommended by the government.

?We?re delighted to announce a 4% pay increase for the colleagues who work in our stores across the country. We know what a difference they make to our customers each and every day, and we?re totally committed to rewarding them well for the great service they provide," Chief Executive Mike Coupe said in a statement.

"Their hard work, talent and dedication have been central to our success and will remain so in the future,? he added.
