Sainsbury's Is Star As Sales And Market Share Rise While Rivals Slump

15th Dec 2015 08:14

LONDON (Alliance News) - J Sainsbury PLC once more emerged the star performer among the big-four UK supermarkets in the latest Kantar Worldpanel figures published on Tuesday, with the group achieving a rise in sales and growing its market share as its rivals continued to struggle.

Sainsbury's sales for the 12 weeks to December 6 rose 1.2% to GBP4.35 billion from GBP4.30 billion a year earlier, helping its market share rise to 16.7% from 16.5%, according to Kantar.

Of the big four, it was the only one to have delivered higher sales and market share year-on-year, as its rivals continue to feel the effect of discounters Aldi and Lidl. Those two once more produced sterling growth in the period, with Aldi sales up 15% and Lidl sales rising 18% year-on-year, as the pair's combined market share stayed at 10%.

Tesco PLC sales declined 3.4% in the period, with its market share declining to 28.0% from 29.1%, while Asda Ltd, owned by US giant Wal-Mart Stores, saw its sales fall 3.4% and its market share decline to 16.2% from 16.7%.

Wm Morrison Supermarkets PLC, which was hit month demoted to the FTSE 250 from the FTSE 100, saw sales decline 2.0%, while its market share declined to 11.0% from 11.2%.

Meanwhile, Waitrose, the upmarket grocer owned by John Lewis, performed well, with sales rising 2.0% and its market share edging up to 5.1% from 5.0%.

Total sales for the grocery market in the period edged up 0.1%, Kantar said, while grocery price deflation has hit 1.9%.
