LONDON (Alliance News) - Supermarket chain Sainsbury(J) Plc (SBRY.L, JSAIY.PK) reported that its total sales for the second quarter grew by 5.0 percent, including fuel, and by 4.6 percent, excluding fuel. On a like-for-like basis, quarterly sales went up 2.1 percent, including fuel, and by 2.0 percent, excluding fuel.
During the quarter, the company's groceries online business grew over 15 percent in the quarter and is currently worth more than 1 billion euros in annual sales. The convenience business climbed 20 percent year-on-year, as customers topped up more frequently in the warm summer weather, Sainsbury added. The firm added that its general merchandise and clothing business continues to grow at over twice the rate of food.
For the first half, including fuel, total sales advanced by 4.4 percent and like-for-like sales by 1.5 percent.
