(Alliance News) - Royal Mail PLC on Wednesday said it will appeal against a Competition Appeal Tribunal judgement upholding a GBP50 million fine from UK communications regulator for anti-competitive behaviour.
The Office of Communications issued a GBP50 million fine to Royal Mail in August 2018 saying the postal services company abused its dominant position by discriminating against its only major competitor delivering letters.
Ofcom said Royal Mail had abused its dominant position by penalising wholesale customers that sought to deliver bulk mail. The hearing was launched after a complaint made by smaller rival Whistl.
The company appealed against the Ofcom decision but the Competition Appeal Tribunal upheld the Ofcom fine in November.
Royal Mail on Wednesday said it has lodged papers with the Competition Appeal Tribunal to seek permission to appeal against the tribunal judgment upholding the fine.
Royal Mail shares were trading 0.4% higher in London on Wednesday morning at 216.20 pence each.
