Rolls-Royce Wins Energy Contract With Petrobras In Brazil

21st Nov 2013 09:22

LONDON (Alliance News) - Engine maker Rolls-Royce said Thursday it has won a USD138 million five year energy services contract with Petrobras to support its oil production activities offshore Brazil.

The firm will supply Petrobras with advanced maintenance and repair services to support fifteen Rolls-Royce RB211-G62 industrial gas turbine power generation units which are installed on four Petrobras oil platforms operating in the petroleum rich, pre-salt Campos Basin.

The Long Term Service Agreement, which holds a value of up to USD220 million over the five-year renewal period, will help to ensure that the on-site Rolls-Royce units continue to operate at peak performance levels, said the company. The four Petrobras platforms, which together can produce over 500,000 barrels of oil per day, or 25% of Brazil's entire output, are reliant on nearly 375MW of Rolls-Royce generated power to maintain a consistently high production output.

Eberaldo de Almeida Neto, general manager of the Rio de Janeiro Operational Unit, Petrobras, said, "Over the past five years Rolls-Royce advanced power generation technology and services has helped us to meet our oil and gas production objectives for these important oil platforms."

Andrew Heath, Rolls-Royce President for Energy, said, "Rolls-Royce technology is at the heart of Brazil's thriving energy infrastructure. This services contract renewal reflects the excellent working relationship we have developed on this project with Petrobras over the past five years."

Over fifty Rolls-Royce engineers and technicians are currently working on the project, with most based full-time on the four oil platforms.

The Rolls-Royce Energy workshop at Macae in Brazil supports the project, said the company. In 2014 Rolls-Royce is set to inaugurate a new USD100 million purpose-built gas turbine package, assembly and test facility in Santa Cruz in the state of Rio de Janeiro, further strengthening Rolls-Royce local, in-country manufacturing and services presence.

Shares in Rolls-Royce were trading down 0.89% at 1,228 pence per share Thursday morning.
