LONDON (Alliance News) - Rolls-Royce PLC Wednesday said it has been awarded the contract to design the gas turbine system for the Royal Navy's future Type 26 Global Combat Ship.
It said it will work with BAE Systems PLC, which is building the ships, and Tognum, its venture with Germany's Daimler, to design the MT30, a system it says will be the world's most powerful marine gas turbine.
The system will combine the Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine with four of Tognum's MTU high-speed diesel generator sets, it said.
Two MT30s were installed in the Royal Navy's new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, earlier this year, and is also used in some US navy ships.
The Type 26 Global Combat Ship will become the Royal Navy's main combat ship, replacing the current fleet of Type 23 frigates. The first of the ships is due to be delivered in 2021.
Rolls-Royce shares were up 0.4% at 1,135.7 pence early Wednesday.
