(Alliance News) - Rio Tinto PLC announced on Wednesday that is has entered a partnership with Swedish investment company Vargas, Mitsubishi Corp and other industry stakeholders to explore a low-carbon aluminium greenfield project in Finland.
Rio Tinto noted that it will provide the agreement, dubbed the Arctial partnership, with access to its AP60 technology and assist in what would be the first AP60 deployment in an aluminium smelter outside Quebec, Canada.
AP60 is amongst the most efficient aluminium smelting technologies currently available at commercial scale.
Arctial will conduct a feasibility study and environmental impact assessment for a potential greenfield aluminium project in Kokkola, Finland.
Rio Tinto shares were 0.8% lower at 4,981.00 pence each around noon in London. They had closed 0.9% higher at AUD120.08 each in Sydney.
Mitsubishi shares closed 1.1% lower at JPY2,599.00 each in Tokyo.
