(Alliance News) - Rio Tinto PLC on Tuesday began restarting operations at its Richards Bay Minerals operation in South Africa.
Work at Richards Bay has been affected by the security situation at the site which hampered the mine's ability to operate safely due to political unrest and rioting in KwaZulu-Natal.
"The safety and security of our people has been our priority throughout and we recognise the collaboration and constructive dialogue we have had with all stakeholders to get us into a position where we can restart operations and resume contributing to the host communities, KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa," commented Rio Chief Executive of Minerals Sinead Kaufman.
"I also acknowledge the resilience and dedication shown by all our people at RBM over the past weeks."
Operations will be ramping up to capacity as soon as possible, with the overall impact of the suspension of operations still to be assessed, Rio said.
Shares in the Anglo-Australian miner were trading up 1.3% at 5,320.74 pence each in London on Tuesday morning.
