Rio Tinto Exploration Chief To Lead Technology And Innovation Unit

24th May 2016 07:25

LONDON (Alliance News) - Rio Tinto PLC Tuesday said it has promoted Stephen McIntosh to head up its technology and innovation division to replace Greg Lilleyman, who is leaving the firm after 25 years with the business.

The multi-commodity miner did not state the reason for Lilleyman's departure but noted his "important role" in assisting with its productivity drive at the company's huge Pilbara iron ore operation in Australia.

Taking over Lilleyman's role is McIntosh, who is the current head of exploration at Rio Tinto managing a 450-strong team of staff in 20 countries. McIntosh has been with Rio Tinto for over 30 years and held several other roles in the past.

Importantly, McIntosh will remain in charge of the company's exploration efforts.

"For a long time now, our technology and innovation function has provided a point of strategic differentiation for Rio Tinto and Stephen [McIntosh] will spearhead the group's drive for further productivity improvement across the business," said Sam Walsh, chief executive of Rio Tinto.

Rio Tinto shares were down 0.8% to 1,929.50 pence per share on Tuesday morning.
