Rio Tinto Chief Executive Sam Walsh To Retire, Jacques To Take Over

17th Mar 2016 06:46

LONDON (Alliance News) - Anglo-Australian miner Rio Tinto PLC on Thursday said Chief Executive Sam Walsh will retire from his role in July.

Walsh, 66, has been chief executive since 2013 and on the Rio Tinto board since 2009. He will be replaced by Jean-Sebastien Jacques, currently the chief executive of Rio's Copper & Coal business. Jacques will become deputy chief executive, and will join the board, with immediate effect to ensure a smooth transition.

"Jean-Sebastien is a very experienced executive with a demonstrated track record and brings a unique blend of strategic and operational expertise," said Rio Tinto Chairman Jan du Plessis.

"Today's announcement is the culmination of a comprehensive and deliberate executive succession process. The board has decided that Jean-Sebastien is the right person to lead Rio Tinto in an increasingly complex world filled with both challenges and opportunities for our industry," du Plessis added.
