(Alliance News) - Rio Tinto PLC on Wednesday said it has appointed legal and compliance executive Isabelle Deschamps as chief legal and external affairs officer from October 25.
The Anglo-Australian miner said Deschamps is currently general counsel of paint and performance coatings company Akzo Nobel NV. Previously, Deschamps was accountable for legal governance and compliance at consumer goods firm Unilever PLC in the UK and the Netherlands.
Rio Tinto Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm said: "Isabelle brings a wealth and diversity of legal experience having worked in various senior legal roles for a number of large multinational companies. I am delighted to welcome her to Rio Tinto and look forward to having her join the executive team and lead our legal, compliance and external affairs teams."
The miner has made several executive appointments in recent months after destroying a 46,000-year-old Aboriginal heritage site - the Juukan Gorge caves - to expand the Pilbara iron ore mine in Western Australia, attracting public outcry and regulatory scrutiny.
The cave explosion led Rio's former chief executive, Jean-Sebastien Jacques, to resign. The company's chair previously stated that he will stand down in 2022.
In early June, the firm appointed former Treasurer & Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ben Wyatt as non-executive director.
Shares in Rio Tinto were trading up 2.3% at 6,023.00 pence each in London on Wednesday morning.
