(Alliance News) - Pulsar Helium Inc on Wednesday reported "a landmark discovery" at its Minnesotan development site.
The White Rock, Canada-based resource company targets helium in the US and Greenland.
According to the firm, its latest discovery "exceeds any previously reported by other helium explorers".
Laboratory results from its Jetstream-1 well, part of the Topaz project in Minnesota, have found concentrations of helium-3, which the firm described as "one of rarest and most valuable isotopes".
Helium-3 has reported prices of approximately USD18.7m per kilogram, Pulsar Helium said, making it over 100,000 times more expensive than more common variants of the resource.
The company has also reported "a sustained flow" of the more common helium-4 at Topaz.
Lab testing indicated sustained helium-3 concentrations of up to 14.5 parts per billion in produced gas. This suggest Topaz's accumulation of helium-3 is among the highest levels of the gas to occur naturally in a terrestrial reservoir, the company said.
Uses of the resource include cryogenics, quantum computing, neutron detection technology for nuclear projects and "as a fuel for future fusion energy reactors," Pulsar Helium added.
Chief Executive Thomas Abraham said the discovery "firmly places Pulsar Helium on the map as a pioneer in the field."
"The next-richest naturally occurring source of helium-3 is arguably the surface of the Moon which has attracted interest from NASA and the US Department of Energy. We believe that Minnesota will be a more reliable and economically viable option," he added.
This follows Pulsar Helium's announcement on Monday that a pre-feasibility study has confirmed "promising geothermal reservoir potential" at its Tunu project in Greenland.
Pulsar Helium shares jumped 26% to 29.53 pence on Wednesday afternoon in London for market capitalisation of CAD66.7 million, or GBP35.5 million.
