LONDON (Alliance News) - The US Justice Department Monday said it settled its claims against BP PLC regarding the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico for more than USD20 billion, according to a report by Reuters.
The oil rig explosion was the worst offshore oil disaster in US history, killing 11 workers and spewing millions of barrels of oil onto the shorelines of several states for nearly three months.
The settlement on Monday is the largest settlement with a single entity in American history, according to Reuters.

The USD20 billion figure is higher than the USD18.7 billion which BP said it would have to pay out back in July.
Shares in BP closed up 4.7% at 368.00 pence on Monday.
