PRESS: UK Minister Pours Cold Water On BT Openreach Split Calls - FT

1st Oct 2015 05:42

LONDON (Alliance News) - The UK's digital economy minister has dealt a blow to a push by BT Group PLC's rivals for the company to be forced to spin-off its Openreach infrastructure business, the Financial Times reported.

Speaking to the FT, Ed Vaizey said he was a "sceptic" about the need to split BT from Openreach. "I think full separation would be an enormous undertaking, incredibly time consuming [and would have] lots of potential to backfire," he said. "Ofcom is looking at it, I am a sceptic but we will have to see what Ofcom comes out with."

Sky PLC, Vodafone Group PLC and TalkTalk Telecom Group PLC have all attacked BT over its ownership of Openreach, which the majority of internet providers use to deliver broadband services. They want the UK's competition authority to investigate the broadband market and argue that conditions would be better if Openreach was run as a separate entity to BT.
