LONDON (Alliance News) - Tobacco companies are set to launch what may be one of the largest ever legal claims against the British government on Friday for losses resulting from the introduction of plain packaging for cigarettes, The Daily Telegraph reports.
The companies are expected to start lodging papers at the High Court as early as Friday, seeking compensation for being stripped of the right to use their brands which may be as high as GBP11 billion, the paper said.
The Telegraph said it understands Philip Morris International, the US owner of Marlboro cigarettes, is likely to be among the first to lodge papers, with others, including UK-listed Imperial Tobacco PLC and British American Tobacco PLC, set to follow soon after.
