LONDON (Alliance News) - The Telegraph reported on Tuesday that Tesco PLC is shutting down its e-commerce website, Tesco Direct.
Tesco Direct, which the supermarket launched in 2006 to compete with Amazon.com Inc and Argos, now owned by J Sainsbury PLC, will cease trading on July 9. The website sells clothing, electricals and home wares.
The Telegraph reporter called the move "the first big decision made by Tesco's new chief executive, Charles Wilson, since he assumed the role in April."
The company will close its Tesco Direct centre at Fenny Lock and instead expand the range of its other website, Tesco.com, to include toys and home wares, according to the newspaper.
"This decision has been a very difficult one to make, but it is an essential step towards establishing a more sustainable non-food offer and growing our business for the future," Wilson told the Telegraph.
