LONDON (Alliance News) - Temporary warehouse workers at FTSE 100-listed sporting goods retailer Sports Direct International PLC are receiving pay which is effectively below the minimum wage, according to a report by The Guardian.
Warehouse staff at the group are required to go through a series of searches at the end of each shift, for which they are not paid, yet can have their pay docked for clocking in only a minute late, the newspaper reported.
The Guardian said the practices used at the company's large warehouse operation in Shirebrook in Derbyshire result in many temporary staff being paid an effective rate of around GBP6.50 per hour, against the statutory minimum wage of GBP6.70.
The report, based on findings by two undercover journalists, also found employees are harangued by tannoy if they are not working fast enough, are banned from wearing other clothing brands and can be fired for accruing six black marks, or "strikes", which are handed out for offences including "excessive or long toilet breaks", "excessive chatting" and "horseplay".
