LONDON (Alliance News) - Union officials and government representatives in South Africa have agreed to meet tomorrow to discuss a resolution over platinum mine strikes, according to Bloomberg Thursday.
The country's labour Minister, Mildred Oliphant, is to lead negotiations in Johannesburg tomorrow between the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union and three major platinum mining companies, her spokesman told Bloomberg.
The three companies, Anglo American Platinum Ltd, Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd and Lonmin PLC, are three of the largest platinum producers in the world.
At least 70,000 platinum mining employees from the AMCU downed tools Thursday demanding a ZAR12,500 minimum wage for entry-level workers and better working conditions.
The AMCU's President Jospeh Mathunjwa told Bloomberg that the platinum companies should expect "marathon negotiations."
