PRESS: Ryanair To Shut Four Spanish Bases In January; 500 Jobs At Risk

23rd Aug 2019 18:07

(Alliance News) - Budget airline Ryanair PLC will shut four bases in Spain putting 500 jobs at risk as part of its wider cost-cutting programme, a local trade union told Reuters on Friday.

Union Sindical Obrera told the news wire the Irish airline confirmed in an email to the union it would close its bases in Las Palmas, Tenerife South, Lanzarote and Girona from January 2020.

The USO explained this could potentially result in the loss of over 500 jobs across pilots and cabin crew. The email from Ryanair also announced it would launch a collective dismissal process.

Last week, Ryanair had confirmed to Reuters that it planned to close its base at Faro International Airport in Portugal as well as two on the Canary Islands. It had cautioned, however, that a final decision on how many had not been made.

Las Palmas, Tenerife and Lanzarote are all part of the Canary Islands. Meanwhile, Girona is a city located in the north-west of the Spanish mainland - near to the French border.
