PRESS: Ryanair forces South Africans to take test in Afrikaans - FT

6th Jun 2022 13:58

(Alliance News) - Ryanair Holdings PLC is requiring South African passport holders to take a test in Afrikaans to prove their nationality, leading to accusations of racial discrimination, the Financial Times reported on Sunday.

The Dublin-based budget airline is telling South African nationals they must complete a general knowledge test, written in Afrikaans, or they will be turned away from their flights, the newspaper said. This is despite Afrikaans being only the third most-spoken language in South Africa and having a history of enforced use under apartheid.

Ryanair told the FT that the questionnaire is being used "due to the high prevalence of fraudulent South African passports".
