PRESS: Royal Mail Turns To Non-Exec Thompson As New CEO - Sky News

11th Jan 2021 06:55

(Alliance News) - Royal Mail PLC will name Non-Executive Director Simon Thompson as its new chief executive, Sky News reported on Sunday.

Thompson, a non-executive since November 2017, has also been the former chief product officer at listed online grocer Ocado Group PLC. He was also the managing director of the UK NHS's Covid-19 test and trace application.

Thompson also has experience at Wm Morrison Supermarkets PLC, Apple Inc and Coca-Cola European Partners PLC.

Keith Williams, interim executive chair, is expected to move back into a non-executive role, Sky News added. Williams moved from non-executive chair to interim executive chair when Rico Back resigned as chief executive officer back in May.

Thompson's appointment could be announced in the "coming days", Sky News added.

Thompson will not be at the helm of GLS, Royal Mail's European arm, fronted by Martin Seidenberg.

The company's interim numbers, posted back in November, showed that in the UK business, parcel revenue exceeded letter revenue for the first time, amid a surge in e-commerce due to Covid-19.

Back in December, Royal Mail agreed a deal to end a long-running dispute on job security, pay and hours for its workers.

The settlement includes a two-year pay deal backdated to April, worth 3.7%, plus a one-hour reduction in the working week, said the Communication Workers Union.
