PRESS: M&S to close French stores, cut products as Brexit hits - Mail

13th Sep 2021 06:59

(Alliance News) - Marks & Spencer Group PLC is reviewing its business in France and is expected to close some stores, the Mail on Sunday reported.

The groceries and clothing retailer may stop selling fresh food at remaining stores as Brexit restrictions and supply chain problems have left shelves in France empty. An announcement on the future of the business could be made in the next few weeks, the Mail on Sunday said, without saying where it got the information from.

M&S has 20 franchise stores in France, mostly in Paris and focused on food. The firm re-entered the French market in 2011, after previously leaving in 2001.

Earlier this year, M&S stopped replaced fresh products with long-life food at its stores in the Czech Republic.

An M&S spokesperson told the Mail: "In light of the new customs arrangements, we are taking decisive steps to reconfigure our European operations and have already made changes to food exports into Czech Republic."

"We operate a franchise business in France and are undertaking a review of the model with our two partners."
