PRESS: JD Wetherspoon Monitors CO2 Shortage To Avoid Sales Fall - FT

21st Jun 2018 06:59

LONDON (Alliance News) - JD Wetherspoon PLC was "monitoring" the global carbon dioxide shortage threatening fizzy drink production, The Financial Times reported late Wednesday.

Brewers and trade bodies have warned that some suppliers in Europe face major issues with CO2 availability. CO2 is used in the draft beer pumps at pubs to give drinks a fizz.

The shortage appeared after five gas producers in Europe closed for maintenance in June, the newspaper said. The UK is expected to be affected the most, as it only has one major CO2 plant in operation.

The British Beer & Pub Association said on Tuesday that disruption in CO2 supply could hit beer producers in particular. However, FTSE 250 pub chain Wetherspoon said it has not been affected yet, but it is closely monitoring the situation to minimise the impact that might occur.

The Financial Times also said a beer shortage during the football World Cup has raised concerns across pubs and bars in the UK as many of them had slow starts to the year due to wintry weather.
