LONDON (Alliance News) - Human error caused the rollercoaster crash at Alton Towers that seriously injured five people in June, the BBC reported citing the Staffordshire theme park, which is owned by FTSE 100-listed Merlin Entertainments PLC.
Two women needed to have leg amputations after the crash of the Smiler ride when their carriage hit an empty carriage in front of it.
The safety control system was manually overridden without the proper protocols being followed, an investigation concluded, according to the BBC. No technical or mechanical issues were found with the ride itself. The ride, which has been closed since the crash, will reopen next year.
