(Alliance News) - Glencore PLC majority-owned Mopani Copper Mines in Zambia closed two shafts at its Nkana mine in a move that led to job losses, Reuters reported on Thursday.
The business news wire cited a Mopani spokesman as reporting: "The closure of the two uneconomic shafts was always part of our plans."
The spokesman told Reuters the move would allow the firm to channel funds towards the completion of other expansion projects. The firm would not confirm how many jobs were to be lost by the non-renewal of the job contracts associated with the Mindola north and central shafts.
