LONDON (Alliance News) - Around 500 workers from the Koornfontein coal mine operated by Glencore PLC in South Africa have gone on strike over the compensation offered to them for planned job cuts at the site, Bloomberg reported on Monday.
The strike, by the National Union of Mineworkers in the country, "follows the decision by the company to offer retrenchment packages to employees as a result of restructuring at the mine, following difficult market conditions," according to Glencore spokesman Gugulethu Maqetuka.
The union claims Glencore is offering more compensation at other sites it operates, Bloomberg said.
