LONDON (Alliance News) - The trial of a British investigator and his wife linked to GlaxoSmithKline PLC started in China in a case considered key in the ongoing bribery investigation into the British drugmaker, the Financial Times reports on Friday.
Peter Humphrey and his wife, Yu Yingzeng, were detained over a year ago due to work they carried out for Glaxo, and are facing charges of illegally obtaining private information on Chinese citizens. The accusations carry a maximum sentence of three years in jail, the FT says.
The arrest of the pair coincided with a Chinese probe into allegations that Glaxo funnelled hundreds of millions of pounds via travel agencies for the purpose of bribing local doctors and health officials to boost sales and raise drug prices.
The FT also reports that Sir Philip Hampton is leading the race to succeed Sir Christopher Gent as the chairman of Glaxo.
Hampton is due to step down as the chairman of Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC next year and is now the clear frontrunner to take up the job at Glaxo once he leaves the bank, according to the paper, citing people close to the process.
