LONDON (Alliance News) - The cost of decommissioning and cleaning up the Sellafield nuclear site in Cumbria has increased by GBP5 billion to a total of GBP53 billion, the BBC reported Wednesday.
Citing the National Audit Office, the BBC reported that the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, the body responsible for the clean up, said the cost would be GBP48 billion a year ago.
The work is also behind schedule, and the organisations involved in cleaning up Sellafield, including the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, the Department of Energy and Climate Change, Nuclear Management Partners, and Sellafield Ltd are due to appear before the Public Accounts Committee on March 11 to answer questions about rising costs and under-performance, said the BBC.
Nuclear Management Partners was awarded a GBP9 billion clean-up contract, which was cancelled by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority in January over issues with the company's competence, whilst Sellafield Ltd is operating the site.
URS, a US company, along with AMEC, now part of AMEC Foster Wheeler PLC, and France's Areva are the parent companies of Nuclear Management Partners.
